Benjamin Edmiston

David Shelton Gallery is pleased to present Naturally, Benjamin Edmiston’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Edmiston marks his debut with a series of intimately scaled paintings and a grid of 50 ink drawings all made on endsheets from vintage paperback books. Working with a limited palette of oil paints, Edmiston brings a painterly sensibility to geometric abstraction. Drips, blobs and drags of paint invigorate deceptively staid compositions of thickly-painted, hard-edged forms realized through layers of paint generously applied with a palette knife. While Edmiston’s imagery is inspired by solid architectonic structures, his paintings recast these would-be massive forms as small-scale, two-dimensional negotiations between shape, color, line and space.
