David Shelton Gallery is pleased to present Naturally, Benjamin Edmiston’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Edmiston marks his debut with a series of intimately scaled paintings and a grid of 50 ink drawings all made on endsheets from vintage paperback books. Working with a limited palette of oil paints, Edmiston brings a painterly sensibility to geometric abstraction. Drips, blobs and drags of paint invigorate deceptively staid compositions of thickly-painted, hard-edged forms realized through layers of paint generously applied with a palette knife. While Edmiston’s imagery is inspired by solid architectonic structures, his paintings recast these would-be massive forms as small-scale, two-dimensional negotiations between shape, color, line and space.
Benjamin Edmiston is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He earned his BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and his MFA from Brooklyn College. He has shown throughout the United States and abroad including David Shelton Gallery, Houston; Cuevas Tilleard Projects, New York City; Charlotte Fogh Gallery, Aarhus, DK; Left Field Gallery, San Luis Obispo CA; and Vox Populi Gallery, Philadelphia, PA. His work has been published in ‘The Age of Collage: Contemporary Collage in Modern Art’; ‘New American Paintings #104’; ‘New American Paintings #93’.
